The place where your questions, get answered! –

Dear P.,

I work in a retail sales business. This is my first sales job. I am having some trouble greeting shoppers. I tend to feel like I am imposing on them if I walk right up to them. The problem is I am not making enough sales because the other sales people are engaging the customers first.

 Thanks You, Lana

Hey Lana,

This is a common challenge. But let me get to the heart of the problem, It’s you. Please don’t take this wrong. I am not saying there is anything wrong with you in fact, what you are experiencing is quite normal. Let me give you some tools to overcome this.

The first part is easy. Go out shopping. I want you to catalog in your mind the number of times salespeople in the various stores greet you. Next, I want you to pay special attention to the way you feel each time you are greeted.   You may begin to notice that you will feel imposed upon or uncomfortable some times and other times not. Examine the way you were approached by the salesperson in the case when you were uncomfortable and also when you felt comfortable.

Through this, you will start to better understand what is inclined to make someone uncomfortable. You will then be able to use those approaches that made you as a customer feel comfortable. Use them with confidence in greeting customers at your own store/showroom. Remember to have some fun with it and just be yourself.

Good luck and all the best, P.
